Plot summary
Between 1405 and 1433, China's Admiral Zheng He commanded seven voyages that carried his hundreds of junks from Ming China to more than thirty countries across Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and Africa. The fleet gathered riches, scientific knowledge and power for his emperor, and no expedition of the age matched its scale. His voyages preceded those of Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. Six hundred years after the first voyage, a National Geographic photographer retraces the route for the anniversary, covering more than 10,000 miles between Yunnan and the Swahili coast of Africa and taking over 40,000 photographs. Filmed in thirteen countries, the program sets his images beside historical recreations of Zheng He's life.
