Plot summary
When Augustine Washington dies in 1743, his son George is left without a formal education, and his older half-brother Lawrence tutors him in land surveying. A decade later in Williamsburg, Virginia, the British Army denies George a commission because of his colonial background. On Lawrence's recommendation, lieutenant governor Robert Dinwiddie signs him into the Virginia Militia and orders him to carry a message into the Ohio Country demanding that the French withdraw. Before he departs, George arrives uninvited at Belvoir, the plantation of Thomas Fairfax, and meets Sally Cary, Thomas Gage and the surveyor Christopher Gist. Gist travels with him, and the two meet Mingo warriors led by the Haudenosaunee leader Tanacharison. The French refuse to leave.
