Plot summary
Lena and Abram, childhood friends in 1940s Philadelphia, want a life together, though she is black and he is Jewish. Abram, a fighter pilot, is killed in action, and Lena enlists after graduating from school. In Georgia, Captain Charity Adams Earley and Lieutenant Abbie Noel Campbell train the enlistees, though the 6888th Battalion has no orders to go overseas. A West Virginian mother who waits for news of her two sons takes the problem to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, saying letters from relatives are severely delayed. President Roosevelt learns that supply shipments took priority over mail, and that millions of letters are stuck in Britain, a backlog several units have failed to clear. Mary MacLeod Bethune argues that Adams's unit is the one to do it.
