Plot summary

Ahmed is a thirteen-year-old Muslim boy living with his family in Seraing, Belgium. After a cousin who was a devout Muslim dies, and under the influence of the imam Youssouf, he makes Islamic practice central to his life and takes an extreme reading of the Quran. Inès, a Muslim teacher at his school, gives him extra help because he has dyslexia. She proposes teaching Arabic through music so students can widen their practical vocabulary, and calls a community meeting about it. Ahmed and his brother Rachid hear from Youssouf that she is an apostate and a blasphemer set on bringing down Islam. At the meeting the brothers say her plan will make Islam vanish and accuse her of indifference because the man she is seeing is Jewish. Inès offers Ahmed a reconciliation, and he shows nothing.
