Plot summary
Dennis Campbell, called D, grows up in West Kingston, Jamaica, in the middle of a war between Skeeter's Tappas and King Fox's Spicers. He lives with his brother Jerry Dread, who wants the shooting to stop and arranges a DJ session between the two sides to broker peace; gunfire at the session kills him. D is drawn to a schoolgirl named Yvonne, but the violence keeps them apart. Ten years on, D works as an enforcer for King Fox, a record producer who also deals drugs. After D mishandles one of Fox's deals, Fox sends him to Hackney, London, to deliver a package of cocaine to the gangster Rico Grimes.
