Plot summary
The thirty-second Survivor Series is built on the rivalry between the Raw and SmackDown brands, with every interpromotional match counting toward brand supremacy. Champions of the two rosters are paired in non-title matches: the Universal Champion against the WWE Champion, the Intercontinental Champion against the United States Champion, and the Raw Tag Team Champions against the SmackDown Tag Team Champions. The Raw Women's Champion was set to face the SmackDown Women's Champion, but an injury days earlier brought a former champion into her place. The card also includes five-on-five elimination matches for the men's and women's teams and a ten-on-ten tag team elimination match on the Kickoff show, while the Cruiserweight Championship is defended in the only match between wrestlers of the same brand.

- Former WWE wrestler Enzo Amore was spotted at the event in a disguised wig and hoodie, made a scene during the AOP vs. The Bar match, and was escorted out and banned from future events at the Staples Center; reports said he bumped into a woman and injured the fan.
- Rousey and Lynch were scheduled for an interpromotional non-title match at Survivor Series, but during a Raw invasion Lynch suffered a legit broken nose and concussion from a Nia Jax punch and chose Flair to replace her.
- Corbin, Drew McIntyre, and Bobby Lashley attacked Strowman, injuring his elbow, in a storyline excuse for him to take a short time off and undergo surgery to remove bone spurs.
- The event was the only Survivor Series to include the 205 Live brand and the first since 2009 to feature three brands.
