Plot summary
In the late 18th century, on the moorlands of northern England, Mr. Earnshaw owns Wuthering Heights, an isolated farm. From the streets of Liverpool he brings home a poor boy of unknown origins named Heathcliff, who is taken in by the Earnshaw family and raised alongside Mr. Earnshaw's own children. At the farm the boy is bullied and whipped, and he grows up with Cathy, Mr. Earnshaw's daughter and his young foster sister. Over the years, his passion for her becomes an obsession. The story concentrates on the two of them from childhood into adolescence, and on their intense relationship.

- James Howson was cast as Heathcliff, the first time a black actor had played the role, after Andrea Arnold widened her search to Yorkshire actors aged 16 to 21 of mixed race, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Middle Eastern descent.
- Before Andrea Arnold took over, Natalie Portman was set to play Cathy but withdrew; Michael Fassbender and Abbie Cornish were then cast as Heathcliff and Cathy by director John Maybury, and later Ed Westwick and Gemma Arterton were attached under director Peter Webber.
- Because Emily Brontë described Heathcliff as a "dark-skinned gypsy" and "a little Lascar", director Andrea Arnold searched for an actor from the UK's Romani community, but the community had doubts.
