Plot summary
Monty Kessler is in his final year at Harvard, writing a thesis about people who depend on public assistance. A power outage wipes out his computer's hard drive. One printed copy survives, so he runs out to make duplicates. He trips, breaks his ankle, and the pages fall through a grate into the boiler room beneath Widener Library. There a homeless man named Simon Wilder is burning them. Campus police arrest Simon but cannot get the thesis back, so Monty pays his fine and accepts a bargain: one page returned for every service he provides.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The exterior of Winthrop House appears, but the interiors are not actual Harvard houses and the last scene was shot at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, dressed up to look like Harvard, with many Illinois students in it. All the outdoor shots of Harvard's Widener Library used the University of Minnesota's Northrop Auditorium.
- The graduation scene was shot while the Illinois climate had not yet allowed the trees to bloom leaves, so artificial branches and leaves were stapled on.
- Seattle grunge band Mudhoney were asked to contribute a track after being sent a clip of a jock running through the snow scored with EMF's hit "Unbelievable"; told an upbeat song like that was wanted, the band offered an instrumental they thought might work.
- The soundtrack contains the U.S. No. 2 hit single and theme song "I'll Remember" by Madonna, and she received nominations from the Golden Globes, Grammys and MTV Movie Awards for it.
- The film grossed $4.3 million in its opening weekend, finishing second, then topped the box office in its sophomore weekend with a smaller $3.7 million.
