Plot summary
A museum robbery goes wrong when a stray gunshot releases an ancient Djinn from a fire opal. One of the burglars, Morgana Truscott, takes the gem and shoots a guard before escaping alone. The Djinn assumes a human face, Nathaniel Demerest, and gives himself up to the police. Morgana dreams of him in his true form. She goes to a church and confides in Gregory, the priest there and once her lover, about the man who confessed to the robbery. Demerest, now in prison, grants inmates wishes in return for their souls, and is suspected of stirring up recent trouble there. Morgana studies Persian mythology and the deity Ahura Mazda, searching for a way to stop him.
