Plot summary
Jacobo Koller owns a sock factory, and his days follow the same routine in near isolation. His brother Herman Köller, who moved away, is coming back to mark their mother's death anniversary, and Jacobo wants to appear to be a man whose life has added up to something. He asks Marta Acuña, the head supervisor at the factory, to pretend to be his wife. In the days before Herman arrives, the two clean and redecorate Jacobo's apartment, sit for a photograph together, and work at presenting themselves as a married couple. Jacobo knows his brother has prospered since leaving while he stayed to nurse their dying mother. At the airport the brothers exchange socks from their own factories, and the visit opens quietly and awkwardly, the two behaving like strangers.
