Plot summary
Ten-year-old Billy Coleman lives in the Ozarks during the Great Depression with his father, his mother and his two younger sisters. He longs for a pair of hunting dogs, and his parents cannot buy them. When he tells his grandfather that God does not intend him to have dogs, his grandfather answers that he must meet God halfway. Billy finds an advertisement for two Redbone Coonhounds and works two years to earn the price. He hides the savings, afraid his father would spend them on a mule the family needs. His grandfather promises him the dogs. They arrive at Tahlequah instead of the store, and Billy, unwilling to wait a week for a ride, slips away at night to walk there. He brings the pups home and names them Old Dan and Little Ann.
