Mac Davis
Biography
Mac Davis was an American songwriter, singer, and actor who started out writing songs for other artists, including several years with Nancy Sinatra's Boots Enterprises in the late 1960s. Elvis Presley recorded his In the Ghetto, Memories, Don't Cry Daddy, and A Little Less Conversation. After signing with Columbia Records in 1970, Davis scored a number one, Grammy-nominated solo hit with Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me and had other successes such as Stop and Smell the Roses. He won the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year award in 1974. He hosted The Mac Davis Show from 1974 to 1976, made his film debut opposite Nick Nolte in North Dallas Forty (1979), and appeared in Cheaper to Keep Her (1980) and The Sting II (1983). Later he played Will Rogers on Broadway in The Will Rogers Follies, voiced characters on animated series, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. He died in 2020.
