Plot summary
Evelyn runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse and has built her life around helping people in trouble. Her fifteen-year-old son Ziggy writes folk-rock songs and performs them for an online fan base, and the two of them find little to say to each other. Ziggy wants to get closer to Lila, an activist in his class, and goes to a political arts festival after school to find her. Evelyn meets Kyle, a seventeen-year-old staying at the shelter with his mother, and is impressed by his kindness. She offers him volunteer work and help toward a scholarship at Oberlin College, though Kyle would rather work at his father's auto shop. Ziggy's father, Roger, is angry that the two of them missed his awards ceremony at work.
