Plot summary
Kanichiro Yoshimura serves a small clan in the northern region of Nambu Morioka, and the pay is too small to keep his wife and children. He gives up his place there and travels in search of better wages, leaving his family behind. He takes service with the Shinsengumi, and among the men of that company is Saitō Hajime, a ruthless killer. The two Shinsengumi samurai live through the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate, when a man's loyalty to his clan and his lord is weighed against his loyalty to his family. The account is told in flashbacks, as Saitō Hajime and another man remember those years.
