Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sakuran (2006)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Sakuran was photographer Mika Ninagawa's first feature film, and the experience proved painful: on her first time behind the camera she felt vulnerable, alone and anxious.
  • Director Mika Ninagawa asked the singer Ringo Shiina to put rock music in Sakuran's soundtrack, but Shiina declined the offer, saying lead actress Anna Tsuchiya already supplied the rock touch the adaptation wanted.
  • Costume designer Daisuke Iga printed Mika Ninagawa's photographs onto the kimonos using Western printing methods, because traditional painting and embroidery would have cost too much time and money, then added gold and glass beads by hand that were strong enough to last the whole shoot.
  • Art director Namiko Iwaki chose a pure red for the film, instead of the vermilion usually used in Japanese films set in pleasure districts, and worked closely with cinematographer Hideo Kumagai so that the red would read well on screen.
