Plot summary
Alice and Niklas, a married couple in Austria, want a child. In vitro fertilization has failed several times, and the disappointment sits over their life together, so they take a holiday at a resort in Sardinia. There they get to know the family staying in the house beside them, and a friendship grows between the two households. The other couple's children keep reminding Alice and Niklas of what they do not have, and envy, frustration and grief that neither of them has spoken about come to the surface between them. The rest they hoped for gives way to a confrontation neither of them can avoid.
