Plot summary
Jeannie Gunn, educated and from Melbourne's upper-middle class, marries Aeneas Gunn after he is made manager of Elsey Station, a cattle property of over 5,000 square kilometers near Mataranka, and in 1902 she travels north with him. The drovers resent her arrival, believing the bush is unsuitable for a white woman, and they mock the couple when they reach the station. While Aeneas is away herding cattle, Jeannie befriends the Aboriginal people, whom the white men at the station treat as inferior, along with the Chinese workers. She shares food with them and tries to break up domestic quarrels. She also takes in Bett-Bett, a semi-orphaned child of mixed heritage, which her husband does not welcome.

- Transport in the Northern Territory cost so much that the film ran 700,000 dollars past its 2.5 million dollar budget; director Igor Auzins later blamed pre-production that was not tightly enough organized.
- Star Angela Punch McGregor said only half the screenplay was ever filmed, with good action scenes cut for time and money, leaving a slower and more intellectual picture than she had expected.
