Plot summary
Jack and Terry Linden host Hank and Edith Evans for dinner one night, and Jack and Edith leave the party together to buy beer. The two men teach literature at the same university, and Jack's marriage to Terry has reached a difficult period, while he and Edith are involved with each other. Hank keeps working at a novel that publishers have rejected, and when he and Jack meet for drinks, Hank admits that a woman from his life before Edith is still on his mind, and that he hopes to see her again. Jack asks why he stays with Edith, and Hank answers that people ought to have at least one affair.
