Plot summary
Stefan is a teenage activist in the Polish underground in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, hiding his work from his mother. After he loses his job at Wedel's and narrowly avoids arrest, he goes to the countryside, where he meets Ala, swimming on an island in a lake. They are drawn to each other. With her and his friends he joins the Kedyw, a Home Army force, over his mother's objections. Ala, from a noble family, leaves for Warsaw for Operation Tempest. When the uprising breaks out on 1 August 1944, Stefan fights, taking part in the capture of a military warehouse in Wola and the freeing of Jewish prisoners from a labor camp. Ala serves as a nurse, called Biedronka, while Kama, Stefan's childhood friend and a dispatch runner, is her rival.
