Plot summary
In the years between the world wars, Rafał Wilczur is a surgeon at the height of his career. His wife Beata leaves him and takes their daughter Marysia with her. Soon afterward he is attacked and robbed, and the injuries to his head take his memory. He is presumed dead. Fifteen years on he lives in the countryside, where he goes by the name Antoni Kosiba. He practices medicine there, since his knowledge of it stayed with him, though he has no account of his own past. What returns to him are fragments, among them the recollection of a daughter.
