Plot summary
On leave in Liverpool, the soldiers of a British battalion learn that their deployment to Yugoslavia is going ahead. Sergeant Sochanik is grieving his brother's death, Lieutenant Loughrey must postpone his wedding to Emma, and privates James and Skeet board the convoy. In Vitez they are briefed to keep the population from starving, and told they may not take sides, move refugees or fire except in self-defense. With Minka as their interpreter, the platoon drives into a valley where Croatian and Serbian forces are pushing Muslim civilians out. A first patrol to collect an injured boy is stopped at a checkpoint by Croatian soldiers who demand to search the vehicles.
