Plot summary
A war between Earth and Mars in 1900 is presented as documented history. The model is the 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Welles, which many listeners took for real news of an invasion. The account is the eyewitness record of Bertie Wells, a journalist and the last living survivor of the conflict. He describes the alien invaders and the destruction they brought to humankind, and his search for his wife, Amy, runs through his recollection.

- To sell its fake-news conceit, the film copied the approach of Orson Welles's 1938 CBS radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds; director Timothy Hines said Welles presented his broadcast so as not to clearly identify it as fiction.
- The 82-year-old actor Floyd Reichman was cast as the survivor Bertie Wells after producer Goforth recruited him from the Theatre Puget Sound website rather than through a casting office.
- According to Goforth and Hines, post-production blended footage from the original film with archival stills, World War I footage, historical maps and photographs to give the mockumentary the look and feel of a real documentary.
