Plot summary
Barbi and her husband Rick live in a Los Angeles suburb in 1972. Her boss sexually harasses her, so she quits, and Rick, unmoved, tells her to become a homemaker instead. He travels often for business, and they quarrel. When he decides to spend a month away on a trip, Barbi decides the marriage is over. Her friend Sheila says that Mark, her actor husband, has left her as well, and the two women choose to live as singles. A madam picks them up in their revealing outfits and offers to arrange their dates and encounters, and Barbi takes the name Viva from an erotic magazine she reads.

- Anna Biller cast herself as Barbi, the housewife at the center of Viva, instead of hiring another actress. She said she would not ask another actress to take off her clothes in the movie with the power trip of "I'm the director, you're the actress."
- Viva was made slowly because production had to be repeatedly paused to raise more money, after Biller's photo series served as a proof-of-concept and secured full funding from a private investor. The film was budgeted at $100,000 but ended up costing $750,000.
