Plot summary
In 1999, Parker Barnes is in prison, a former Los Angeles police officer jailed for killing political terrorist Matthew Grimes, who had killed Barnes's wife and daughter; two news reporters were also shot in that confrontation. Barnes and fellow convict John Donovan test a virtual reality system that LETAC, the Law Enforcement Technology Advancement Centre, runs to train police officers. Inside it they track SID 6.7, an entity assembled from the personalities of many serial killers. SID's creator, Dr. Darrel Lindenmeyer, moves the SID 6.7 module into a synthetically grown android body, and SID reaches the real world. Commissioner Elizabeth Deane and police chief William Cochran offer Barnes a pardon if he returns SID to virtual reality, and Dr. Madison Carter helps him.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Screenwriter Eric Bernt based villain SID 6.7 on real artificial-intelligence research he saw at Carnegie Mellon University, particularly Joseph Bates's Oz Project, which used Pac-Man-like 'woggle' creatures programmed with a preset array of twenty emotions to behave more human.
- Star Denzel Washington rewrote much of the story and dialogue during filming, cutting a romantic subplot between his character and Dr. Carter that had been in the original script.
- After the success of The Lawnmower Man, director Brett Leonard turned down several virtual-reality scripts because he felt they relied too heavily on cybersex to sustain a whole film, and chose Virtuosity instead for its focus on action and nanotechnology.
