Plot summary
Thomas Novacheck has adapted the 1870 novel Venus in Furs into a play and is directing it himself. He spends a day in a Paris theater auditioning actresses for the lead, Wanda von Dunayev, and complains on the phone about the poor performances he has sat through. Ready to leave for his fiancée, he is interrupted by Vanda Jordan, an actress drenched from the rain. She says she had a slot earlier that day, but her name is not on his list. With wild energy she talks him into staying to read. At first she seems untalented; once she begins, her skill is clear, and she has brought the entire script rather than the pages the others were given, and knows it by heart.
