Plot summary
Paloma Josse, eleven years old, lives with her family in a luxurious apartment in Paris. She is intelligent and watches the adults around her closely, and what she sees of grown-up life leads her to expect disappointment. She sets a date for her own death, her twelfth birthday, 165 days away, and with her father's old camera records the people near her, among them her mother, who depends on antidepressants, and her moody sister. In the same building works Renée Michel, a gruff, solitary concierge who hides her taste for literature from the residents. Kakuro Ozu, a Japanese man, moves into the building and recognizes her as a fellow reader; the two become friends and speak of the interests they share. Paloma often prefers Renée's rooms to her own home.
