Plot summary
Ray Stokes is a police officer on a distant mining colony run by corrupt officials. His wife, Dana, is the Contract Wife of his boss, John Dawson, an arrangement that settled the medical bills of their daughter, who has died. When Samuel Nelson of the Enforcement Division arrives to clean up the colony's police, he is killed during his investigation. Stokes is framed for the death of a fellow officer. Dawson, named in Nelson's death, wants no inquiry and puts Stokes on a six-month run to Earth guarding a shipment of cash. The crew of the Endeavour plans to take the money ship while its crew sleeps.
