Plot summary

In 1822, the island then called Van Diemen's Land holds the Macquarie Harbour penal settlement, a feared place for convicts banished from their homeland. Alexander Pearce and seven other prisoners, English, Irish and Scottish men, escape into the wilderness and hope to reach settlements to the east. Their early enthusiasm fades when hunger takes hold. Most came from cities and do not know how to hunt or fish, and they realize they are lost. The group includes a sailor, a farmer, an ex-soldier, a baker and thieves. Strength drains and despair grows as they try to keep moving through unfamiliar bush.
