Plot summary

On a winter morning in the vineyards near a small village in the Gard, the body of a young woman lies in a ditch. The gendarmes take her for a vagrant and bury her in a potter's field. She was Mona Bergeron, and the weeks before her death come back through scenes of her on the road and through the recollections of the people who crossed her path: a housekeeper, goat farmers, a professor who studies plane trees, a Tunisian vineyard hand, and homeless youths who gather at a railway station. Mona hitchhikes, pitches a tent, takes casual work, and goes without food, cigarettes and hash. She tells a companion she gave up a secretary's job in Paris for freedom and a life with no responsibilities.
