Plot summary
Nory Boxwood-Horace and her best friend Reina Carvajal discover they have magic: Nory shifts into animals, Reina commands fire. Both enroll at Sage Academy, where students test for a place in the honors class of their kind of magic and follow rules called the Sage way. Reina's fire earns her a spot with the honors Flares. Nory, aiming to become a cat, turns into a cat and dragon hybrid instead, and lands in the Upside-Down Magic class for students with imperfect abilities, taught by the groundskeeper Budd Skriff. She meets Elliot, whose Flare makes smoke, Pepper, whose Flicker pushes objects away, and Andres, a Flyer carried higher and higher who has trouble getting back down. Headmistress Knightslinger calls these students easy targets for Shadow Magic.
