Plot summary
Sawyer Valentini works phones at a sales job in Pennsylvania, far from her mother Angela in Boston, and lives alone. Two years of attention from David Strine have left her frightened in her own apartment, and a date ends with her shut in the bathroom. She goes to Highland Creek to talk to a counselor about her fear and her occasional thoughts of suicide. The counselor suggests extra counseling and has her sign a consent form for admission. Staff take her belongings and examine her, and the police will not act on her calls. In the ward she meets patients Nate Hoffman and Violet, and after she lashes out she is restrained, sedated, and told she will stay a week.
