Plot summary

Francis, a successful crime novelist getting on in years, arrives in Venice to rent an apartment where he can work in quiet for a year. Judith, the real estate agent he meets, insists on showing him a house on the island of Sant'Erasmo that can be reached only by boat. He is taken with her, an ex-model about twenty years his junior, and agrees to rent the place on condition that she move in with him. Eighteen months later they are married and settled there, and his writing has stalled. He wanders the streets and canals of the city looking for inspiration. Alice, his grown daughter from an earlier marriage, comes to stay with her ten-year-old daughter, Vicky.
