Plot summary
Rosario crossed into the United States without papers and works in Los Angeles, sending money home to her son, Carlitos, who lives in a Mexican town with his grandmother, Benita Reyes. The two speak by phone each week, and Rosario describes the street around the payphone she calls from. On his ninth birthday, Carlitos learns that his grandmother has died in her sleep, and that his aunt and uncle want custody of him. Instead of going with them, he pays coyotes to take him across the border, hoping to reach his mother. The journey leaves him alone in a Texas parking lot, with his money gone and the men he paid no longer with him.
