Plot summary
Bob and Cindy Russell have moved their three children from Indianapolis to a Chicago suburb, and their teenage daughter Tia is still angry about leaving. Her relationship with her mother is strained. Then Cindy's father has a heart attack, and the couple have to set off for Indianapolis with little warning. No suitable sitter can be found, so they leave Tia, Miles and Maizy in the care of Bob's brother Buck, an unemployed bachelor who bets on horse races, drinks heavily and has never met the two youngest children. Buck's girlfriend of eight years, Chanice Kobolowski, who owns an auto shop, would like to marry and have children, while Buck guards his freedom.

- Filmed primarily in and around Chicago, Uncle Buck was the first film Hughes wrote, directed and produced under his multi-picture agreement with Universal Pictures; much of the production was based at the vacant New Trier High School in Northfield, Illinois, where several interior sets were constructed.
- Production designer John Corso began designing the sets in October 1988, and within seven weeks his construction crew of twelve carpenters and five painters began work on the two levels of the Russell house.
- Uncle Buck remained the number-one film for four consecutive weeks and among the ten highest-grossing films for nine weeks; over the extended Labor Day holiday weekend it grossed $7.8 million, ahead of Parenthood ($7.5 million) and The Abyss ($5.5 million).
- Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a score of one and a half out of four, writing that Uncle Buck was unusually bitter and angry for a Hughes movie and that "there's an uncomfortable undercurrent in the material".
- The television spin-off starred Kevin Meaney as Buck, a slob who drinks and smokes; the show was not received well by TV critics, and after CBS moved it to Friday to establish a comedy night there, its ratings quickly plummeted and it was canceled.
- In 1991, the film was remade in the Indian Malayalam language and released under the title Uncle Bun, starring Mohanlal.
