Plot summary
Their father is imprisoned, and the seven Weber children, Alfons, Senta, Ruth, Gertrude, Renee, Judith and Bela, must survive Nazi Germany on their own, ranging in age from 6 to 18. A farmer carries them in his truck to an orchard east of Berlin, where they spend two years hidden in a laundry hut, guided by their father's order that they always stay together. The years of hiding bring hunger, loneliness, bombings and fear. The daughter of the youngest sibling grew up with unresolved questions about how her mother and her mother's six siblings came through it, so she travels across Germany to follow their route and hear the account from the brothers and sisters still living, most of them in their eighties and nineties.
