Plot summary
The diary found in a vacant New Hampshire farmhouse belonged to Linda Bishop, a well-educated mother who had spent three years committed to New Hampshire State Hospital and wanted to keep clear of the mental health system. She spent that winter there, in record cold, and her pages describe about four months of hunger and mental illness, apples and rainwater, and a belief that God would save her, mixed with passages of beauty and humor. Her words and the accounts of people around her describe a system that failed to protect a homeless woman living with mental illness.
