Plot summary
Gabriel Carvin, a Michelin-starred chef in Saumur, earns a third crystal star from a culinary critic. That same night his wife Louise leaves him, a separation that brings a crisis to the family and strikes him hard. After a near-death experience he sets out on a search that has occupied his life: the flavor of a bowl of noodles that a Japanese chef served him when he was young and beat him in a competition. He then travels to Japan to find that rival and that taste, to find again the simple pleasures of friendship, and to understand umami, the fifth taste of the palate.
