Plot summary
Ayan Ranjan, a St. Stephen's College graduate, joins the Indian Police Service and is posted to Laalgaon in Uttar Pradesh as Additional Superintendent of Police. The local officers, Brahmadatt Singh and Kisan Jatav, receive him, and he soon runs into the caste discrimination that shapes the village; he discusses it with his wife, Aditi, by phone. At his welcoming reception, villagers beg the police to trace three missing Dalit girls and are brushed aside. Satyendra Rai, a college friend of Ayan's who works for the state government, behaves oddly at the gathering. The next morning two of the girls are found hanging from a tree; the third, Pooja, is still missing, and Ayan orders a First Information Report and a postmortem. Activists of the Bhim Sangharsh Sena, led by Nishad, demand justice.
