Plot summary

Sandra Bya works at Solwal, a small solar panel factory in Seraing, near Liège, and has been on medical leave for depression. While she is away, the manager, M. Dumont, decides her section can manage with one fewer worker and asks the sixteen employees to choose between keeping Sandra in her job and receiving a €1,000 bonus each. A show of hands goes against Sandra, but Juliette, a coworker and friend, argues that the foreman Jean-Marc swayed the vote. Dumont agrees to a second, secret ballot on Monday morning. Manu, Sandra's husband, urges her to spend the weekend visiting the colleagues who voted for the money and trying to win them over; for several of them, that sum is meant for their families.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Two Days, One Night (2014)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Dardenne brothers shot Two Days, One Night in chronological order and demanded many takes of its long sequence shots: 56 takes for one sequence on the second day of filming, and 82 on the fourth. Marion Cotillard sometimes asked for more, and it went up to 95 or 100 takes.
  • The screenplay of Two Days, One Night was based on a story the Dardenne brothers read in a sociology book about a worker at the French carmaker Peugeot in 1998 who was fired after his boss urged his team to vote for his dismissal because he was blocking their bigger bonuses.
  • One of the Dardenne brothers' first requests of Marion Cotillard was that she lose her Parisian accent so her character would sound like an authentic Belgian, and she was very happy when the brothers praised her Liège accent.
  • Marion Cotillard's Best Actress Oscar nomination for Two Days, One Night made her the first actor ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for a Belgian film.
  • The Dardenne brothers met Marion Cotillard by chance on the Belgian set of Jacques Audiard's Rust and Bone (2012), which they co-produced, when she stepped out of an elevator holding her baby, and told her about a project they were writing; she said she wanted to work with them too.
  • Marion Cotillard was the first French actor the Dardenne brothers cast as the lead in one of their films, which usually have relatively unknown Belgian actors in the cast.
