Plot summary
Ullas is thirty-five and gets by on tricks played on the people of his town, with money his single spur and no wish to take a risk for it. He arranges to marry Simran, the sister of Patelar, a Maarwadi lender he is in debt to, since her assets would come to him, and Patelar agrees because he wants his sister to be happy. A coincidence of names then brings Ullas a proposal from Laya, a rich Malayali woman living in Canada, and he accepts at once. He tells Patelar he has dropped his interest in Simran, who is enraged and turns violent. Canada and the money waiting there pull him, but the ways and the speech of the place are hard for him to accept.
