Plot summary
In an alternate 1997, survivors scratch out a living in the Wasteland, a trash-covered expanse ruled by Zeus, a tyrant who has captives ground into water by a machine. The Kid is a solitary teenager who rides his BMX bike across the wastes, trading with the junk dealer Bagu for water and his favorite Turbo Rider comic. One day he crosses paths with Apple, a girl whose odd, pushy friendliness frightens him, and he retreats to his bunker. She follows him there and hands back the comic he dropped, so he lets her stay. He shows her his rules for getting by, the two grow closer, and Zeus plagues them both as they try to keep to themselves.
