Plot summary
Mary Giordano is a senior at a Catholic school in Burlingame, California, where her siblings John and Vicki and their widowed mother Celia treat her ambition to join the police as an amusement. Her father died in the line of duty, and she feeds that ambition on mystery novels, film noir and detective magazines. She hears about a killer who has taken the lives of several teenage girls, some of them her classmates, and opens an investigation of her own. Her father's former partner, Detective Jerry Guinn, wants her far from the case. Mary instead asks police cadet Tony Campbell for help in tracking down the murderer, and the two grow close as they work.
