Plot summary
Phyllis Nefler, a Beverly Hills socialite going through a divorce from Freddy, takes over her daughter Hannah's troop of Wilderness Girls to stay close to her. The girls include Tiffany, Emily, whose actor father is out of work, Tessa, who is in therapy twice a week, the hostile Chica, and Claire, a child star. Rain washes out their first campout, so Phyllis moves it to the Beverly Hills Hotel and hands out her own merit badges. Velda Plendor, who leads the strict Culver City Red Feathers, rules the custom badges ineligible and pushes for the troop to be disbanded.

- The film's animated opening credits, set to "Make It Big" by The Beach Boys, were produced by what would later become Spümcø, with the involvement of animators John Kricfalusi, Lynne Naylor, Bob Camp and Jim Smith, all four of whom worked on The Ren & Stimpy Show.
- In the music video for her 2015 song "She's Not Me", Jenny Lewis, who played Hannah in the film, wears the Troop Beverly Hills uniform alongside the actors Zosia Mamet, Vanessa Bayer and Leo Fitzpatrick.
- In April 2026 it was announced that Cameron Diaz would star in and produce a sequel to the film, which will be written and directed by Clea DuVall for Columbia's sister company TriStar Pictures.
- The film is inspired by the experiences of producer Ava Ostern Fries, who based it on the time she spent running her daughter's Girl Scout troop.
