Plot summary
Vince and Don, firemen in Fort Smith, Arkansas, are working a burning building when an old man presses an envelope on them, saying he stole from Jesus Christ. He forces them to take it and dies in the flames. The envelope holds a map, a gold cross and the old man's ID, and the two learn he robbed a church of Greek gold in 1940 and hid it in an East St. Louis, Illinois building. They drive there to collect it. While searching, they walk in on a gang that has come to carry out a killing, with King James in charge. Vince and Don are seen, and they seize Lucky, James' half-brother, to force a standoff.

After test screenings, Trespass was given a new ending because black audiences disliked that both Ice T's and Ice Cube's characters died. Co-writer Bob Gale said the message got lost in the gunfire, so the death of Ice Cube's Savon is never shown.- Trespass's July 3, 1992 release was pushed back after the Los Angeles riots, and the film was retitled. Universal chairman Tom Pollock said attention would focus on black guys with machine guns going after white guys, making release irresponsible.
- Jazz musician John Zorn scored the entire film, including both the original and alternate endings, but director Walter Hill fired him because he was unhappy with the score and brought in his old friend Ry Cooder to rescore the whole film.
- Because the title Looters was felt too inflammatory, the studio came up with fifty alternative titles and the filmmakers at least twenty more, including Point of No Return and Blood and Gold. Director Walter Hill disliked Trespass because it reminded him of a 1950s-era RKO film starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell.
- Ice T said Trespass was the first film in which he was the point-blank star, carrying the movie.
- Much of Trespass is seen through a video-camera viewfinder, an idea Walter Hill took from a Washington Post article about street gangs who filmed their own activities.
- Trespass was mostly filmed in the vacant Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills in Atlanta's Cabbagetown. The mill complex, begun in 1881 on the site of the Atlanta Rolling Mill, is now apartments called The Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts and condominiums called The Stacks.
