Plot summary
Alex Cooper, fifteen, lives in Victorville, California. She meets Frankie Jackson and they become a couple. When her Mormon parents, Jessica and Dennis Cooper, ask where she goes, Alex tells them she has feelings for Frankie. Her parents put her out of the house, and she stays with a neighbor, Daniella. Then they collect her, saying she will stay with her grandparents in St. George, Utah. They deliver her instead to Johnny and Tiana Simms, who take in troubled kids, run conversion therapy, and know her grandparents. Alex is kept in their home, cut off from all contact outside. The Simms tell Alex that they know the teachers and the police, and that nobody will take her side. They make her stand facing a wall all day with a backpack full of rocks.
