Plot summary
His first wife, Lena, is gone, and Jack Deth has found that his other wife, Alice, is lost to Harris. He agrees to another assignment in the past. As he sets out, a Solonoid left over from an earlier assignment, hidden in the time portal, throws the TCL chamber out of order. Jack comes to in a different dimension, a kingdom whose technology matches that of medieval Europe. The physics of the place leave most of his devices useless. There he meets the Nobles, this world's version of Trancers, who feed on the life force of the kingdom's mortal inhabitants.
