Plot summary
Alim lives in London, openly gay and settled with his British boyfriend, Giles. Born in Kenya and raised in Toronto, he left Canada for London and a life away from his conservative Muslim upbringing. His widowed mother, Nuru, knows nothing of Giles or of her son's orientation. Nuru and her sister Dolly both care most about keeping up a proper public Muslim image. As Dolly prepares for her own son's wedding, Nuru feels her life lacks a daughter-in-law and decides to visit Alim in London. Alim is not ready to tell her about Giles or his homosexuality, so he and Giles hide it while she stays. For guidance he relies on an imaginary friend in the form of Cary Grant, whose advice tends to create trouble rather than resolve it.
