Plot summary
Anthony "Tony" Bourdain is nineteen and studies at Vassar College in 1975, hoping to become a writer. He goes after a writing fellowship that would take him to New York City and claims to his parents and to Nancy Putkoski, whom he knew in high school, that the place is already his. The fellowship does not come through, and Tony heads for Provincetown, Massachusetts, the summer spot Nancy had mentioned, where he learns she is seeing a pizza delivery man. After drinking at The Flagship, a seafood restaurant in town, he is rude to Mary, who waits tables and tends bar, and gets thrown out; Sal, one of the cooks, robs him. Short of the ferry fare, he goes back and asks the head chef for work, saying he has kitchen experience.
