Tokyo Towers: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad (2007) on Netflix

Plot summary

Masaya's earliest memories are of his mother Eiko tiring of the drunken behavior of his father Oton, a painter, and carrying the boy back to the small mining town she came from. He grows up there and spends summers with Oton, and he decides to become an artist as well. His father gives him a little training; his mother gives him unquestioning support. That support helps him win a place at a regional high school with a noted art program. From there he slips into a wasteful student life that carries on into college in Tokyo, paid for by the money Eiko keeps sending him. Then her health fails and she comes to live with him in Tokyo.
