Plot summary
Gideon and Suzie have lived in South Central Los Angeles since leaving the South years ago, and they look after their grandson Sunny while their son Samuel, called Babe Brother, and his wife Linda are at work. Harry, a friend from the South they have not seen in years, arrives without warning, and the couple welcome him into their home and urge him to stay as long as he likes. Harry is charming and down-home, and also enigmatic. His arrival presses on strains already running through the family, above all in Samuel's relations with his parents, his wife Linda and his elder brother Junior.

- Charles Burnett's To Sleep with Anger grew out of a PBS project he failed to get made, about a young girl killed by ironic events. When PBS brought in people who wanted to make it into their movie, they wanted the things that were cultural or specific about it taken out.
